THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS

Have you ever driven past a rundown part of town or observed people behaving in hoodlum manner without a care of the consequences and stop to think how did things get so bad?

The interesting thing is that these places where at one time respectable and affluent residential area, and these hoodlum where respectful individuals. So what happened, my guess is that the community (society) got so use to living the good life that they neglected to consider what they would do should trouble come knocking.

To help explain my point I will draw an analogy with the Martial Artist; a Martial Arts practitioner, who has learnt how to fight and is competent at defending him or herself, must still work on developing strategies for dealing with adversaries, this can be done via practicing the Basics as well as performing and analyzing Katas or Forms, the Katas and Form give a mental imagery of various confrontational scenario. The Martial Artist, who neglects to sharpen his or her saw through daily practice, will one day find themselves nursing their batted body because they failed to see a confrontational situation developing further more; their tool for combating such a situation would have been numbed due to lack of usage.

Had they kept up their daily or weekly practice, their mental awareness would have been strong, hence leading them to observe anything that looked out of the ordinary, make the necessary assessment and then respond accordingly.

Going back to our issue, we must ask what is the thought process or beliefs of the community, my view is that the people living in these communities are of the mindset, that “bad things don’t happen here”, to the point that, when something bad does happen; they comment “that’s rare”, however more importantly it is left unchallenged, (the broken window concept). The natural order of things is that, if a rare occurrence is not challenged it soon becomes the norm, and when things become the norm, at the tipping point it becomes an endemic (Darkside).

Then before you know it, civilised residents have moved out, shops and flats are boarded up, graffiti is everywhere, the natural inhabitants of such areas move in; and so we have another down and out rundown area. Why? We got so busy living the good life that we didn’t stop to think, what would we do or how would we respond should a Bad things happen in our Community?
A lesson from the way of the Warrior, even in peace times, strategise on how you would deal with your enemies when they approach.
